Åland is a small territory but with a distinct food culture that carries clear traces of both Swedish and Finnish traditions, filtered through the specific conditions of island life. What distinguishes Åland food is simplicity, seasonality and high-quality ingredients.

Åland pancake

The Åland pancake (Ålandspannkaka) is without doubt the islands' most famous dish. It's an oven-baked, thick pancake with a soft, almost pudding-like texture — completely different from the thin Swedish pancake. It's traditionally served with stewed Åland plums and whipped cream. Find it at most restaurants in Mariehamn and at summer cafés around the island. The recipe is simple and the ingredients easy to find — try making it at home after your visit.

Lamb

Åland is known for its lamb production. Åland lambs graze freely in the open landscape and produce meat with a mild, aromatic flavour. Lamb appears on most restaurant menus during the summer season and is sold in local shops. Look for locally labelled meat.

Fresh fish

Pike-perch, perch, pike and whitefish — all caught in the same archipelago waters you swim in. Fish is served both traditionally (boiled, fried) and in more modern interpretations at Mariehamn's restaurants. At the summer market in Mariehamn, local fishermen often sell freshly caught fish directly.

Dark rye bread

Åland dark bread (svartbröd) is a dense, sour, dark rye bread with a long baking history. It's a bread with character — heavy and filling, with a slightly sweet undertone. Buy it at local bakeries or grocery shops and eat it with butter and cheese or as an accompaniment to the fish.

Stallhagen — local brewery

Stallhagen in Godby is Åland's local brewery, founded in 2003. They brew both beer and cider with an archipelago theme. Their products are found in shops and restaurants around the island. The brewery also arranges tours during the summer season.

Mariehamn's summer market (by the harbour) is the best place for local produce and products. Open during the summer months, usually mornings. Check current times with Visit Åland.
