One of the most common mistakes visitors make on Åland is underestimating how quickly the weather can change, particularly out at sea or in the outer archipelago. What starts as a sunny July day can turn to showers and a fresh breeze within a couple of hours. On the other hand, you don't need to pack for a mountain expedition — it's about having the right things, not the most things.
Clothing
- Rain jacket — absolutely essential, always pack one. A thin packable jacket takes up little space.
- Layers — a thin fleece or sweater under the jacket makes a big difference if the temperature drops.
- Comfortable walking shoes — rocks can be slippery, sandals are rarely enough.
- Swimwear — you'll regret it if you leave it behind.
- Hat and gloves — in spring and autumn it can get cold in the evenings.
Navigation and communication
- Downloaded offline map — mobile data doesn't always work out in the archipelago.
- Ferry timetables — save them on your phone (alandstrafiken.ax). Miss the last ferry and you stay on the island.
- Powerbank — a charged backup is invaluable on a long day out.
Food and drink
- Bring more water than you think you need. There are no vending machines in the outer archipelago.
- A simple packed lunch keeps you going without needing to find a café.
- Pack out your rubbish — right of access principles require leaving places as you found them.
Health and safety
- Sun cream — reflections off the water amplify UV radiation.
- Insect repellent — not always necessary, but mosquitoes can be troublesome inland in June–July.
- Small first aid kit — plasters for rock cuts are a common need.
Always check the weather forecast for Åland on the morning of your trip. A quick check saves you from unpleasant surprises out in the terrain.
