One of the most striking things about Åland is what lies beneath your feet. As the Scandinavian ice sheet advanced and retreated, it ground down the bedrock, removing sharp edges and depositing large boulders — called erratics — far from their origin. Many of the isolated boulders you find perched on open rock or in forest clearings were carried here by glacial ice.
